FAQ

                                                 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is a plant plug?

For the most part this is explained on the homepage. Growers often refer to plants in plug trays that are grown from seeds as plugs and plants that are in plug trays that are propagated with cuttings as liners. But often it seems the terms are used interchangeably.

2. What's the difference between buying a plug and a regular plant?

Not a lot. A plug is smaller and has less root mass and less vegetative mass and therefore is somewhat more fragile. Of course if you plant it in the right conditions and keep it watered regularly it will do just fine. The only real differences are that if you're planting a plug in the fall, you want to plant it as early in the fall as possible to give it time to establish. Likewise, if you live in a hot area of the country, you'll want to plant as early in the spring as possible (and here it depends on how heat tolerant the plant is too) to make sure it's well established when the really hot weather starts. Also, with a plug, there is more potential for over-fertilizing, so you'll want to use something light, if you use anything at all when you first plant it, something like root stimulator and starter solution, preferably at about half strength.

3. What is a perennial?

A perennial is a plant that comes back year after year. An annual is a plant that is planted each year but dies when it freezes. A biennial (not too common and we aren't offering any) is a plant usually planted in the fall that survives the winter but usually doesn't survive the following summer. Some Foxgloves are examples of biennials. Also, pansies are sometimes referred to as biennials though more commonly they're just considered annuals.

4. If I buy now, when will I receive my order?

That is covered in the shipping schedule.

5. What is a tissue culture?

Tissue cultures are plants cloned in a lab in test tubes or petri dishes. We don't sell tissue cultures. We sell plants that were tissue cultures that have been transitioned and established into soil. The advantage to tissue cultures is that they're clean and diseases can be completely controlled. Much of our stock comes directly from tissue cultures. ALL of our Hosta stock comes from tissue cultures which eliminates any potential for Hosta Virus X.

6. Do you guarantee your plants?
